Dear BIS Families,

At the beginning of this school year a letter was sent home to all Barnstable Public School families that stated that Barnstable has adopted the ALICE protocol for our emergency management system.  BIS staff began to train on the ALICE system this past summer and have continued to train during our professional development time this fall.  Staff was presented with information and the rationale behind the ALICE protocol.  They then participated in drills to review their response to various situations presented to them.  At this time we are prepared to present information to our students about the ALICE program.  This Wednesday, during our building’s Connection Block, students will be introduced to the program.  We will not run any ALICE drills on Wednesday, but rather just present the students with information.  As this is a change from the old protocol of Lockdown, it is important that our students begin to be made aware of the new approach.  All BIS students will be presented with the same material from their Connection Block teachers, which include their homeroom teacher and another staff member familiar to the students.  The expectation is that we will continue to prepare students for the new response protocol through multiple training sessions that will eventually include practice drills.  Information about ALICE will be available at the school on the parent/teacher conference days.  The presentation material will be posted to the school’s website following Wednesday’s lesson.
