Principal Search Process
Advertise the Position
The position will be posted beginning January 8, 2021 and will close on February 5, 2021. The position will be advertised on the district’s online platform, TalentEd. Using our online search platform means the position will also be posted on School Spring and other national online platforms. In addition, the position will be posted with the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, the Massachusetts Partnership for Diversity in Education and National Minority Update.
Develop a Leadership Profile
Feedback and input provided by stakeholders will create a leadership profile. Through a series of focus groups in January and early February, and an online survey, students, staff, parents/caregivers will be able to provide input to identify the attributes of the principal of Barnstable High School. The leadership profile will aid the Interview Committee in identifying finalists for the position.
Screen Applications for Required Qualifications
Human Resources will screen all submitted applications to ensure that applicants meet the required qualifications of the position as detailed in the job description.
Convene the Interview Committee
We will convene an interview committee of 16 individuals, including the following,
3 BHS parents/guardians: 1 selected by BHS School Council, 1 selected by ELL PAC, and 1 selected by SEPAC
3 BHS staff: selected by the Barnstable Teachers Association (BTA)
3 BHS administrators: selected by the Barnstable Administrators Organization (BAO)
3 BHS students: selected by BHS school counselors
3 district staff: Director of Facilities, Data & Accountability Analyst, and the Co-Director of Special Education (secondary)
The Chair of the Interview Committee will be Bill Cole, Director of Human Resources. The BTA, BAO, BHS School Council, BHS ELL PAC, and SEPAC will be responsible for communicating and selecting individuals interested in serving on the interview committee. The BTA and BAO will randomly select interview committee members from a pool of volunteers. Final selections of interview committee participants will be submitted to Bill Cole.
At this time, it is anticipated that meetings will take place online, due to COVID restrictions. The first organizational meeting of the interview committee will take place at the end of January. At this meeting, a timeline for the interview process will be established. The goal of the Interview Committee is to select 2-3 finalists. Once announced, the finalists will proceed with the following activities:
Finalists will attend separate community forums so that Barnstable parents/caregivers, students, educators, staff, administrators, school committee members, and community members will be able to observe and interact with each of the candidates, ask questions, and give feedback to the Finalist Interview Committee. *Due to COVID restrictions, forums will be virtual.
Site Visits to Finalists’ Schools
A team of parents/guardians, BHS faculty, staff and students, along with district administrators will conduct virtual site visits. The site visit team will share their feedback with the Finalist Interview Committee.
BHS Site Visit
Each finalist will spend a full-day at Barnstable High School to meet with students, staff, parents/guardians, department head, and district administrators. (COVID health and safety protocols will be implemented for all in-person meetings or classroom visits. Virtual meetings will take place as required.) Feedback will be solicited from every individual that met with the candidates in order to provide input to the Finalist Interview Committee.
Finalist interviews will take place after the above activities. The interviews will be conducted by an interview committee including me, our Assistant Superintendent and Executive Director of Student Support and SEL, along with the Town’s Deputy Finance Director and Director of Human Resources. As part of the finalist interview process, the interview team will review feedback from the community forums, site visits, and BHS site visit. I will announce the candidate, and enter contract negotiations with the candidate once the process is completed.
As dates are identified for student, staff and family engagement in the search process, we will notify our BHS Community through email and our district Facebook page. Additionally, I will continue to provide informational updates as we move through the process.
