Mask Guidance Update

Portuguese Update.pdf | Spanish Update.pdf

In light of the Commissioner of Education’s non renewal of the mask mandate, the Barnstable School Committee has adopted a revised policy.

Effective Monday, February 28, 2022, the use of masks will be optional for all BPS students, staff and visitors to our school buildings and on school buses. While not required, masks are recommended for unvaccinated and/or immunocompromised individuals.

Please note that masks will still be required for all in the following situations:

  1. In school health offices (per State guidelines)
  2. In accordance with DPH/DESE protocols if someone has tested positive for COVID-19

Please know that the health and safety of our students and staff have guided all decision making throughout the course of the pandemic. The rapid decline in case counts within BPS supports this decision, and it is supported by both our District Physician Consultant and Town Health Department Director.

To ensure that this shift is safe and successful for all, we ask families to help us with the following:

  • Please encourage your children to respect the decisions of others. Some will continue to wear masks, while others may decide not to. We want all students and staff to feel supported and respected in their choices.
  • If you want your child to continue to wear a mask, please have this conversation with them. School staff are not going to be able to keep track of who should or should not be wearing masks.
  • If your child is sick, please keep them home and alert the school nurse. Keeping all illnesses, not only COVID-19, out of our schools is of utmost importance.
  • Please consider signing your child up to receive free weekly at-home COVID-19 tests. These can be used for weekly screening tests, if your child is sick, if they have been exposed to COVID-19, etc.

Thank you for partnering with us in keeping our BPS community safe and supportive.
