Quarantine

Barnstable Public Schools
Quarantine Requirements

Portuguese.pdf | Spanish.pdf

Based upon discussion with local doctors and public health officials in regards to breakthrough cases of COVID-19 in fully vaccinated individuals, the following quarantine requirements will be used by Barnstable Public Schools for students and staff exposed to COVID-19:

All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must quarantine per district protocol if identified as a close contact of a positive case of COVID-19 outside of school. Out of school exposures are likely to be unmasked, more prolonged, and in less structured environments than in school. Last year, all COVID-19 transmission that was observed was due to exposures outside of the school setting.

Close contacts are defined as individuals who have been within 6 feet of a COVID-19 positive individual while indoors, for at least 15 minutes during a 24 hour period. The at-risk exposure time begins 48 hours prior to symptom onset (or time of positive test if asymptomatic) and continues until the time the COVID-19 positive individual is isolated.

NOTE: Household Exposures: if the COVID-19 case cannot isolate from others in the home (own bedroom, no shared meals, not within 6 feet for 15 or more cumulative minutes of other household members on any of their 10 days of isolation) - then the quarantine period for the non-infected household members does not begin until after the positive case’s 10 day isolation period is over.

  • If able to isolate, the quarantine period begins on the day of the last exposure

Quarantine Options Based on Exposure Location and Vaccination Status

NOTE: Quarantine day “0” is the last date of exposure to the positive case. See above explanation for household contacts.
