3-6' Protocol

Barnstable Public Schools will be following an updated protocol on who is required to quarantine after being exposed to COVID-19 in the classroom or on the bus. This change is supported by both our district physician and the town public health director.

New Protocol:

Individuals who were within 3 to 6 feet of an individual who tested positive in either the classroom or on the bus, while both individuals were wearing masks, do not have to quarantine and can return to school as long as they do not have symptoms of COVID-19 or test positive for COVID-19. This is based on updated guidance from the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, developed in collaboration with the Department of Public Health and the Executive Office of Health and Human Services.

This does not apply to any out of school exposures to COVID-19. You will still be notified if your child was within 6 feet of a COVID-19 positive individual, but they will not be required to quarantine if they were at least 3 feet away in the classroom or on the bus. All close contacts will still be urged to get tested 4-5 days after the exposure. If you have any additional questions, please contact your child’s school nurse.
