Future Problem Solving
Future Problem Solving is a rigorous academic program, part of the Gateway umbrella that applies critical and creative thinking to approach problems we will face in the future, hoping to find real solutions to mitigate the negative consequences of these problems. Some issues include climate change, space exploration, pollution, advances in technology that threaten individual rights and freedom, aging, social media, international travel - the list goes on. The students research the topic, reading from a variety of sources. Students are taught skills that help them identify crucial issues and facts in the future scene, isolate the problem that needs the greatest attention, find creative solutions that address the problem, evaluate those solutions with targeted criteria that they decide on, and finally develop a detailed written action plan that comprehensively explains the best solution. The FPS teams are comprised of 4 people who work together to brainstorm ideas. Team work is an important part of the program; ideally teams are balanced with people who have different strengths, such as writing, evaluating, and time management.

Role Playing Games Club
The RPG club is a social club for students who like playing role playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. These are tabletop games where the players use their imagination to form a simulated adventure, but more importantly, they are games you can play with friends. You need not have experience. At a typical meeting, we have about 2 minutes of announcements and then everyone breaks up into smaller groups and plays RPG games. Members typically stick with the same group for several weeks, sometimes months to play out their game. It's all very casual, and very fun. New members are always welcome, but sometimes we have to limit the number of members depending on how many DM (Dungeon Masters) we have to run the games. We meet Tuesday afternoons. You must have your own transportation home.

Yearbook
Yearbook is a full-year, in-school business responsible for the production of the Barnacle, Barnstable High School’s official yearbook. In this course, students learn about many aspects of business management, from organizing, advertising, and running sales campaigns; constructing and living within a budget; rising to the challenge of meeting intractable deadlines; and trouble-shooting and problem-solving. Because students are responsible for the design, layout, and content of the yearbook, they draw upon the artistic skills they have developed over their careers as students in areas such as writing, photography, art and graphic design. Students interested in taking Yearbook should be, above all, self-motivated and possess a superior work ethic.
