Growing Literacy Equity Across Massachusetts (GLEAM)
What is GLEAM?
Literacy Vision
All Barnstable Public School students deserve joyful and inclusive learning environments that pave the way to continuous learning, curiosity, change-making and meaningful engagement with the world around them. We aspire to create a learning community with students and educators engaging in challenging, authentic, adventurous, meaningful, and affirming experiences so that learning, independence, and achievement may flourish for all.
- Learning in literacy will include speaking, listening, reading, reasoning, and writing that provides opportunities for students to
engage with complex texts, about thought-provoking topics, which reflect their own experiences and those of others - communicate effectively with others and think critically about their learning through speaking, listening, and various modes of writing
- strengthen foundational skills and build knowledge to support comprehension
- develop civic mindedness that prepares them to make meaningful contributions in their communities and beyond
- experience connections in the content and literacy instruction in various educational settings within a student’s day
Our goal is to create learning environments where educators and students achieve more than they imagined possible.
Evaluation Update
Grant Requirements:
The GLEAM Team is following a process outlined by DESE’s IMplementMA for evaluating and selecting high-quality instructional materials (HQIM). Over the past two months, members have developed criteria aligned to the needs of Barnstable, and six programs* were reviewed. Resources such as EdReports, CURATE, Washington Model for Bias, as well as information from other districts who have completed an implementation, were components in the evaluation. As a result of this evaluation, the GLEAM Team has selected two programs to put forth for educators to pilot, review and provide feedback.
-
Amplify CKLA
- EL Education

Criteria
- Culturally responsive
- Explicit, structured foundational skills and systematic phonics
- Complex, rigorous texts (quality)
- EL component and embedded SEI strategies
- Multi-tiered and inclusive of EL, SPED, and intervention

Professional Development for Educators
This year, educators are participating in ongoing professional development using evidence-based literacy practices. During the November half-day, educators focused on foundational skills, keeping complex texts at the center of instruction, and practicing close reading to provide access to complex texts.
