    Hello Hy West Families!

We are off to a great start at Hyannis West! If your child is in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade, I hope they had an amazing first two days of school. If your child is an incoming Kindergartener, welcome!! I hope you were able to attend orientation last week and gain some useful information. We are so excited to welcome our new Kindergarten friends on Tuesday!

This is the first edition of our Hy West Family News. You will receive an update every Sunday via email. It will inform you of what’s happening at Hy West, celebrate accomplishments, alert you of upcoming events, and share useful information and resources. I hope you find these weekly updates helpful!

    • There is NO school tomorrow, Monday, September 5th, in observance of Labor Day. There is also a half day of school on Wednesday, September 14th. On half days pick-up is at 11:45 am and buses depart at 12:00 pm. There is no after school daycare on half days. Please view the district calendar, this will show all half days and days off of school.

    • Being in school every day, on time, is extremely important for school success. Please make sure that if your child is riding the bus, he/she has a current bus pass that is securely attached to their backpack. If you have not requested or received a bus pass, please call the Transportation Office at (508) 790-6498 or visit the Barnstable Public Schools Transportation page.

    • If you drop-off and/or pick-up your child, there are procedures to follow. For everyone to be safe, remain in your car, follow the car traffic around to the busport (one line in the morning and two in the afternoon), and a staff member will meet you at your car. There is no parking allowed around the busport area during drop-off/pick-up times. If you need to visit the front office, please park in a designated parking space and buzz in at the front door. Please use the car sign that you were given either at Backpack Night or in your child’s backpack this week. Kindergarten students will receive their car sign on Tuesday afternoon.

    • Drop-off begins at 8:45 a.m. Students are tardy after 9:00.  Pick-up is from 3:15 - 3:30 p.m.  Buses depart the school at approximately 3:40.

    • The first few weeks of school are spent building positive relationships, establishing routines, and assessing students so we can best support social-emotional and academic needs. Teachers will take time modeling and practicing classroom and school-wide routines. View our matrix of expectations for most areas of the school. Classroom expectations will be created WITH the students in the upcoming days.

    • Save the date! Wednesday, September 21st is our Hy West Open-House. This is a chance to tour the school and meet the educators who work with your child. If your child’s last name begins with the letter A - L, you will attend from 5:30 - 6:15 pm. If your childs’ last name begins with the letter M - Z, you will attend from 6:15 - 7:00 pm. More details will follow.

    • For student safety, it’s extremely important to update your child’s contact information each year. To update your child’s information, click https://www.barnstable.k12.ma.us/update_portal. The username is your child’s 6 digit ID (“lunch number”) which the classroom teacher can provide for you. The password is your child’s birthdate _ _/_ _/_ _ _ _.

    • If you haven’t already, please join the Hyannis West Facebook. This is another way to get important information, see pictures of our students having fun and learning, and see reminders of upcoming events.

    • The first PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) meeting is September 8th at 6:00 pm via Zoom. Meetings will be on the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm. During meetings, we will discuss fundraising efforts and schoolwide events.  We’d love to see you!

    • If your child is too sick to attend school, please report their absence to Nurse Ricki at (508) 790-6480 ext. 1532 or via email balestri_ricki@mybps.us.

    • Please use these important links as needed:

Please check your child’s backpack nightly and check your email frequently as this is the school’s primary method of communication with our families. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, Mr. Currey, or me. We’re looking forward to an amazing school year!

    Respectfully,
    Kathi Amato
