Principal’s News and Information

  • March 17, 2024

    Hello Hy West Families,

    • During last week’s half day, teachers who are trying out 2 potential reading programs were able to share information and updates with other teachers. The goal is for the district to decide on new reading resources by mid-April.

    • Our next Hy West Family Sharing Night is this Thursday, March 21st. The topic is Instruction/Assessment.  The session will be presented in English at 5:30, Portuguese at 6:15, and Spanish at 7:00. Future dates and topics can be found here. We hope to see you in person, but if you can’t, join us virtually using this Zoom link.

    • The Hyannis West PTO Meeting that was scheduled for tomorrow is CANCELED. There will, however, be a special meeting on Monday, March 25th, at 5:15 pm, at Hyannis West, for any Hy West parents/guardians who are interested in helping with Teacher Appreciation Day in May.

    • Our 3rd Grade students are preparing to participate in Massachusetts state testing. They will be testing in Reading on April 2nd and 4th and in Math on May 7th and 9th. Please be sure your 3rd grader is in school, on time, on those days, unless they are too sick to attend school.

    • Do you or someone you know have a child who will turn 5 before September 1st? If so, please be sure to use the link below to register them for Kindergarten.

    • Each newsletter I will share information about what our students are learning in one of their Enrichment classes:

      • Kindergarten has been learning about the four seasons and what makes them different. They learned that there are patterns to the seasons and made weather predictions.  After learning why birds lay their eggs in the spring, students made a bird nest.

      • First grade has been learning about different types of light sources.  They figured out how shadows are created by making their own shadows with flashlights and different types of objects.  They also learned that the sun is a light source that creates the seasons.

    • The 2nd Trimester Report Card for students will be available this Friday, March 22nd.  The Report Card will let you know if your child is making effective progress toward grade level standards.  Please check your email on Friday for details about how to access your child’s report card online. You can also request a paper copy from your child’s teacher.

    • Please ask your child about Learning Buddies.  Two Fridays per month,  pairs of classrooms come together (Kindergarten/2nd grade and 1st Grade/3rd Grade) from 2:30 - 3:00 to engage in fun learning activities together.  The goal of Learning Buddies is for students to understand they are part of a larger community and to build more positive connections within our school.

    • Congratulations to this past week’s Star Students who showed patience by raising their hand before calling out.

Please check your child’s backpack nightly and check your email frequently as this will be the school’s primary method of communication with our families. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, Mr. Currey, or me.

    Respectfully,
