• Dear Barnstable Community Innovation School Community,

My name is Kelly White and I am the reading teacher at BCIS.

We work closely with the classroom teachers to provide each student with reading instruction at their level.  My goal for the students of BCIS is to build confident, strategic readers who love reading.

We use teacher recommendations and our school reading assessments to determine each student’s reading level. This includes their foundational reading skills and comprehension.  We also use hands-on interactive teaching methods to get them involved in the learning process.

Our reading intervention program is Leveled Literacy Intervention by Fountas and Pinnell. It incorporates word work, high interest text, writing, and comprehension lessons.

Please encourage your students to read at home.

Exposure to books, magazines, comics, newspaper articles and online reading games outside the classroom will strengthen their reading skills.

The reading program we use in the classroom is Wonders by McGraw-Hill. It has a web component that allows students to sign in and practice their reading skills at home.  Regular practice on this website will help your student grow as a reader.

Each student also has a Reading A-to-Z account for online reading practice.

Reading A-to-Z has a variety of books available in a wide range of levels. I recommend having students read easier books to develop how quickly they recognize words and read in phrases.  Reading A-to-Z will also read higher-level books to your student. Having books read to them will build their vocabulary and peak their interest.

    Thank you and keep reading!

    Kelly White, M.Ed Reading
