Hyannis West Elentary and Barnstable Public Schools are pleased to announce that our application for the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) after school and summer program has been granted by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education!  Our 21st CCLC after school program will frun from 3:30pm to 6:00pm Monday through Friday starting on October, 2019.

The 21st CCLC after school and summer program will focus on project based service learning with a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Curriculum.  The 21st CCLC grant program provides federal funding for the establishment of community learning centers that provide academic, artistic, and cultural enrichment opportunities for children, particularly students who attend high poverty and low-performing schools, in order to meet state and local standards in core academic subjects.

Student attendance is mandatory, as students must attend a mimum number of days.  Students will spend two days each week participating in learning zones where they will collaborate with a community organization focusing on STEM activities that will provide meaningful service learning experiences that promote problem solving and solution-orientated tasks.  The other two days of the week students will engage in enrichment clusters.  These enrichments clusters will also focus on STEM and have a service learing emphasis but allow students to engage in opportunities that enrich their acadmice development.  The final day of the week will serve as a whole group day where students engage in social emotional develoment and interactions with the community based parnters to learn and apply effecitve social skills and engage in social emotional learning.

Some of our community partners include: Cape Cod Cooperative Extension-4H Development, Cape Cod Maritime Museum, Long Pasture Audubon, Green Briar Nature Center, Barnstable High School Drama Club, Gosnold of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Community College, Friends of Barnstable Harbor, and Calmer Choice.
