Welcome to the Barnstable Intermediate School speech and language resource page.  This web page is intendedas a resource for families and teachers of students at BIS.  It has information, ideas and suggestions for practicing language and social language skills.  The information is provided by Barnstable Intermediate School’s two Speech and Language Pathologists, Jeanne Baskin and Barbara King.  We encourage you to view our links and find out more about what your students are doing in their sessions with us, as well as strategies that you can use at home to improve your students’ communication skills.  Please visit Ms. Baskin’s BIS Social Skills Lab Glogster site: http://jeannebaskin.edu.glogster.com/bis-social-skills-lab/ and Ms. King’s Language Literacy Lab Newsletter located as a list to the left of this page.

Speech pathologists in the school setting are professionals who assess speech and language development and treat communication disorders that would significantly impact students’ ability to access the grade level curriculum.  At BIS these may include skills such as vocabulary development, word usage, expressive language, impaired social pragmatic communication, and language processing.  We provide intervention strategies for teachers and parents for home and classroom practice and we work with groups of children to promote self-correction of mild speech and language problems that do not require therapy.
