  • Hello Hyannis West Families!

In light of recent events, this was an extremely emotional week for all of us.  Please know that the Hyannis West staff is dedicated to keeping your children safe and we will continue to review and practice our protocols related to the security and safety of our building and everyone in it.

    • Our students and teachers did an amazing job preparing for the Memorial Day assembly this past Friday. While it was cloudy and windy, it didn’t dampen their voices as they sang patriotic songs, honoring the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
    • Most grade levels have upcoming field trips planned. When you receive a permission slip for your child, you must complete and return the form in order for your child to attend.  If you lose the permission slip and need another, please contact your child’s teacher.
    • A form went home about the Title I Family Game Night. It is on June 9th from 5:45 - 6:45 p.m. It will be held in the Hy West Courtyard, so bring a blanket and a game to play. This is a great chance to meet other Hy West families. If you are planning to attend, please complete and return the form so we can have an accurate count.
    • Here is important information regarding your child moving to the next grade level:
      • If your child is in Kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grade and you are staying in the Hyannis West district, you don’t have to do anything. Your child will automatically roll into the next grade level.
      • If your child is in 3rd grade and you are staying in the Barnstable district, your child’s records will automatically be transferred to Barnstable United Elementary, where your child will attend 4th grade.
      • If you are planning to move out of the Hyannis West district, please contact us as soon as possible so we can get the transfer process started.
      • If you have or know a child in our district who will be 5 years old by September 1st, they need to register for Kindergarten.
    • Our 3rd graders will be visiting Barnstable United Elementary School this Thursday, June 2nd. This is a yearly tradition (pre-Covid) that allows our students the opportunity to see the school they will attend for 4th grade.  Please ask them their thoughts and feelings about the visit.
    • We are still working on the Star Expectation of using kind, respectful words. We are focusing on times when it might be hard to use kind words - when you're tired, hungry, frustrated, overwhelmed, or angry. Those are times when we have to try even harder to be kind and use respectful words.
    • Our Lost and Found is still overflowing! Check out the pictures of the lost clothing items on our Hy West PTO Facebook Page.  If items aren’t claimed by the end of the school year, they will be donated.
    • At Hyannis West we use a matrix of expectations for behavior in all areas of the school. When we are consistent and use this common language throughout the school, all students know the expectations and can follow them easily.  With Covid protocols lifted, we are working to revise our school-wide matrix. We welcome family input! Feel free to email me with any suggestions or ideas.
    • Field Day is scheduled for Friday, June 17th.  Students will spend a half day outside with their classmates, participating in fun activities.  Every student will receive a field day t-shirt to show off their Hy West pride!  More details to follow.
    • Our next PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) meeting is Wednesday, June 1st at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. We’d love to see you!
    • If your child is sick and cannot attend school, please report their absence to Nurse Ricki at (508) 790-6480 ext. 1532 or via email.

Have a wonderful week! If you ever have any questions, concerns or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Currey or me.

    Respectfully, Kathi Amato
