  • Hello Hyannis West Families!

It’s hard to believe that by the end of this week, we’ll be in the month of April.  This school year is flying by!  We must be having fun!

    • Only about 16% of our families have completed the online survey. Your input is extremely important to us and we will use the results of the survey to ensure that Hy West is a welcoming, safe school for our students and families.  If you haven’t already, complete the Family Survey.  Thank you!
    • With visitors now able to enter the school building, we are welcoming back volunteers to enhance the educational experience for our students. Volunteering at Hyannis West may mean that you are working with students in your child’s classroom or you are chaperoning children on a field trip.  If you are interested in being a Hy West volunteer, you need to register with Barnstable Public Schools.
    • Empowering our students to be independent thinkers and problem solvers is important to us. When reading or completing homework at home, if your child says, “I need help” or “I can’t do this”, please encourage them to use strategies they have been taught and/or to give their best effort.  When they independently persevere through a task that is challenging, they build their academic skills and their confidence.
    • Please view the Wellness Policy for Barnstable Public Schools.
    • Please review and empty your child’s Red Folder each night. This gives you a chance to see their learning, learn about important upcoming events, and stay connected to their classroom and our school.
    • Our Star Expectation for the next 2 weeks will be Solving Problems. This is a skill that all students learn through our Second Step Curriculum.  Students are taught to identify and describe a problem, then think about the consequences before solving it.
    • A reminder that state MCAS testing for our 3rd grade students is April 5th and 7th (English Language Arts) and May 18th and 19th. (Math)
    • Last week we invited our 3rd grade students to apply to become Hy West Student Ambassadors. These students will be given opportunities to act as role models for our younger students.  Interested 3rd graders completed and submitted an application and this week we will hold “interviews”.  They are super excited to show off their leadership skills!
    • Below is information about what Title I Teachers are focusing on with our 3rd Grade students for the month of March:
      • Reading - MCAS is quickly approaching! This month in third grade, students continue reading to build fluency and comprehension, as well as answering short answer and multiple-choice questions. In Title 1 groups, students are receiving specialized instruction in specific reading skills they need help with, in addition to reading to build fluency and comprehension.
Does your child/children love playing on their tablet or computer? If so, check out SplashLearn for fun and educational phonics and reading games! Making an account for parents is free!
      • Math - This month in third grade our students are focusing on how to quickly add & subtract all numbers within 10. For example, when shown the equation 4 + 3, students quickly know that the answer is 7. We are encouraging our third grade students to no longer use their fingers to count on in order to find the answer but rather use the various strategies that we have discovered together. To solve the above equation, a student may say “I know my doubles. 3 + 3 = 6 so this double plus 1 more would make the answer 7.” Strategies like making a 5 and then making a ten or using our doubles (4 + 4 = 8) are strategies that our third graders are finding most useful to add and subtract all numbers within 10.
    • There are Bi-lingual Art Classes being held at the Cape Cod Art Center at 3480 Main St, Barnstable Village. Classes will be held for Spanish and Portuguese speaking children, ages 8 - 12 years old.  Call (508) 362-2909 for more information.
    • Our next PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) meeting is Wednesday, April 6th at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. We’d love to see you!
    • If your child is sick and cannot attend school, please report their absence to Nurse Ricki at (508) 790-6480 ext. 1532 or via email.
    • Yearbooks are now on sale! Each yearbook is $12 for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders. All third grade students will receive a free yearbook at the end of the year! Flyers will go home soon but you can also order them online.
