March 6, 2022

  • Hello Hyannis West Families!

I can’t believe it’s March already!  Hopefully the warm weather is coming soon!  Please enjoy the latest news from Hyannis West.

    • Thank you to everyone who helped support the Hyannis West PTO Prize Calendar fundraiser! We raised just over $5,000 as a school community! With the help of our students, we are picking the prize winners daily and posting the videos on the Hyannis West PTO Facebook Page.  We are also contacting winners directly.  Congratulations to this week’s Calendar Prize winners:
      • March 1st - Jennifer Remie
      • March 2nd - Jessica Cisternelli
      • March 3rd - Lacey Downey
      • March 4th - Peter T (online)
      • March 5th - Lorena Tadim
      • March 6th - Ronice Wallace
    • This Thursday, March 10th, at 6:30 p.m., we will be holding a Family Zoom Storytelling Night w/ award winning storyteller, Antonio Rocha. We hope to see you and your child on Zoom! Thank you to the Enoch Cobb Trust for funding this amazing event!
    • With masks now being optional, some students and staff continue to wear masks, while others have not. We have focused on how this is a personal choice and that we need to be kind and respect the choices that everyone makes.  Everyone has been extremely accepting of those choices and it has been absolutely amazing to see smiles again!
    • This is what our Title I Teachers are working on with our KINDERGARTEN students for the month of March:
      • Reading - This month in Kindergarten, students continue to work on their letter names and sounds. Students are also continuing to practice their sight words, and blending sounds together to create and read new words!  In Title I groups, teachers are providing additional support in these areas and working with students to help them gain new strengths while solidifying areas they are already strong in.  Does your child/children love playing on their tablet or computer? If so, check out SplashLearn for fun and educational phonics and reading games! Making an account for parents is free!
      • Math - This month in Kindergarten, students are still working on identifying the numbers from 11-19. We like to call these numbers our “teen numbers.” We are practicing counting objects and then finding the number that corresponds with that amount. This is helping our students to realize that every number represents a set number of items. Giving your child 11-19 objects to count and then having them identify what that number looks like would help them with this skill.
    • This Friday, March 11th, 2nd Trimester Report Cards will be completed. They will be accessible to families via the Aspen Family Portal after 4:30 p.m. on Friday. I will provide directions to families on Friday. If you cannot access the report card online, you can request a paper copy from your child’s teacher.
    • For the next 2 weeks, our school-wide STAR expectation is respecting and accepting differences. Last week we focused on how we may look and sound different and how accepting those cultural differences can make us a more inclusive, welcoming school community.
    • As part of their Give Back Where It Counts promotion, the Shaw’s store, located at 1070 Iyanough Rd, is sponsoring Hyannis West Elementary for the month of March. During the month, Hy West will receive $1 from each purchase of a $2.50 reusable bag. Every little bit counts!
    • The Hyannis West PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) is in need of your help! Upcoming events such as Staff Appreciation Day and the Yearbook need volunteers.  If you are interested in helping with these events, please contact the PTO President Stacy Callahan.
    • Our next PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) meeting is Wednesday, April 6th at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. We’d love to see you!
    • If your child is sick and cannot attend school, please report their absence to Nurse Ricki at (508) 790-6480 ext. 1532 or via email.
    • Yearbooks are now on sale! Each yearbook is $12 for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. All third grade students will receive a free yearbook at the end of the year! Flyers will go home soon, but you can also order them online
