  • Hello Hyannis West Families!

Here is the second edition of the Hy West Family News. You will receive a newsletter from me via email every Sunday night that will celebrate accomplishments, announce upcoming events, highlight family engagement opportunities, and provide useful information for families to support their child’s learning at home. The Hy West Family News will be sent to families via email and saved on our website.

    • A reminder there is NO school on Monday, October 11th. Also, there is a half day of school coming on Wednesday, October 20th.  Lots of learning still takes place on half days so please make every effort to have your child attend.
    • Arriving to school on time allows your child time to eat breakfast, build relationships with their teacher and classmates, and engage in Morning Meeting. School officially begins at 9:00 a.m.  At 9:00 the drop off line is closed and parents/guardians will need to walk their child to the front door.
    • In order to promote an inclusive, joyful and respectful school community, Hyannis West Elementary prides itself in using the Responsive Classroom approach.  One way this happens is that every classroom has a Morning Meeting from 9:05 - 9:30 a.m. During this time the class engages in a greeting to welcome each other, a sharing to get to know each other, an activity to have fun together, and news and announcements to prepare for the day ahead.  It is a wonderful way to start our day!
    • Picture day was a success on Friday! If you didn’t get a chance to place an order and you would still like to, visit Lifetouch.  The Picture ID can be found on the Lifetouch flyer that was sent home or you can call Ms. Curran at the front office.
    • Some families were asking if the mask mandate is still in effect. The answer is yes.  All students and staff are still required to wear a mask on buses and when inside the building.  Mask breaks are provided when students are eating, learning or playing outside, and when scheduled by the classroom teacher.  If your child forgets a mask, no problem! We will give them one.
    • Great news! Hyannis West received a fresh fruit and vegetable grant! This means that every child at our school will have a healthy snack provided every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The snacks vary from pears to peppers to carrots to kiwi. If you don’t think your child will eat the snack options, feel free to still send an extra snack in their backpack.
    • Our first PTO meeting of the year is this Wednesday, October 6th, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. The PTO is our Parent-Teacher Organization.  This group of parents/guardians and staff members work together to bring joy and fun educational experiences and resources to our students.  The group organizes fund-raising events and all funds collected go directly to our students.  Portuguese and Spanish translation will be available.
    • Hyannis West uses the Second Step Curriculum to teach social-emotional skills to our students. Make sure to join Second Step to watch videos about the Second Step program and get information about what your child is learning. All classrooms are in Unit 1.  When schools and families partner together and use common language, everyone benefits!
    • For your child’s safety, each year we ask families to update their child’s contact information. You will need your child’s 6 digit ID number which the classroom teacher or Ms. Curran can provide for you.
    • While we are in the process of updating our website, there is still access to important resources and information. The website can be found at https://www.barnstable.k12.ma.us/hywest.  Also, please join our Hyannis West PTO Facebook Page for important school and district information

Have a great week! If you ever have any questions, concerns or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Currey or me.
