Elementary October 2019 Newsletter

  • Hello Families,

We began this year with our monthly mantra, Everyone Can Learn! It is the Barnstable Public School District’s belief that all students are capable of learning and growth.

In second grade, our first few weeks of school were focused on learning the difference between a Growth Mindset and a Fixed Mindset.Third graders reflected on our growth mindset strategies from last year and are ready for new challenges ahead!

A fixed mindset is the belief that we’re born with a fixed amount of intelligence and ability, avoiding challenges. A growth mindset is a belief that with practice, perseverance, and effort, the potential to grow and learn is limitless. People operating in the growth mindset tackle challenges.

All students engaged in a variety of growth mindset vs. fixed mindset activities to promote effort and perseverance. We hope you will commit to joining us on this Growth Mindset journey. Here are some things you can do at home to extend and promote growth mindset:

    • Encourage your child to take risks
    • Praise your child for the amount of effort they put into learning a new concept
    • Emphasize perseverance and effort, not only in school, but with extra curricular activities
    • Praise mistakes, reminding your child that is how we grow and learn

The Renzulli Learning system is being piloted for Grade 3, Tier 3 Gateway students. It is an interactive online system that provides a personalized learning environment for students, resulting in increased engagement and

higher academic performance. Students completed the Renzulli Profiler, which is a comprehensive digital snapshot of the student’s interests, learning styles, and expression styles. Not only does the profile allow teachers to achieve a better understanding of their students, it provides playlists of activities for each student based on his or her unique combination of interests, expression styles, and learning preferences. Be on the lookout for your child’s personal profile to come home.

We are looking forward to another exciting year!
