The BHS Math Department agrees with the Massachusetts Department of Education's vision of the mathematically proficient student in the 21st Century. “The mathematical skills and understanding that students are expected to demonstrate have wide applicability outside the classroom or workplace. Students who meet the standards are able to identify problems, represent problems, justify conclusions, and apply mathematics to practical situations. They gain an understanding of topics and issues by reviewing data and statistical information. They develop reasoning and analytical skills and make conclusions based on evidence that is essential to both private deliberation and responsible citizenship in a democratic society. They understand mathematics as a language for representing the physical world.” 

 

The math program at Barnstable High School is aligned with the current 2017 Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics. Students will develop, apply and extend the academic development, social & emotional learning, and employment & career readiness skills, as described by the Portrait of the Graduate, throughout their mathematical experiences at BHS. 

 

Please Note: The BHS graduation requirement and minimum admissions requirement for state colleges and universities requires students to complete 4 units of math including completion of Algebra II or the Integrated Mathematics equivalent, including math their senior year. Students may substitute one unit of Computer Science (AP Computer Science Principles or AP Computer Science A). This should be taken into consideration when planning your course of study in mathematics. 

 

Required Summer Math Program - Most of the Barnstable High School math courses have required summer work. Assignments are posted on the BHS webpage. Not completing this assignment may significantly impact students’ first quarter grades. Courses that have required assignments are:

will also be available in the summer in the main office.
