    Hello Hy West Families!

    • Starting Friday, December 2nd, first trimester report cards were made accessible to families online in the Aspen student portal.  Directions for online access were sent in a separate email.  In addition, a paper copy was sent home by your child’s teacher so be sure to check their backpack.

    • You will be able to talk to your child’s teacher during Family Conferences this Tuesday and Thursday.  By now you should have received a day/time from the teacher.  If you cannot make the scheduled time, please be sure to let us know so that we can reschedule.  Communication between home and school is so important.

    • There are two half days of school this week due to those Family Conferences. On Tuesday and Thursday this week, pick-up will begin at 11:45 and buses will depart at approximately 12:00.  There is no after school daycare or 21st Century Program on half days.

    • Do you own your own business or know someone who does?  The Hyannis West PTO is looking for service/product donations for our Annual Prize Calendar Fundraiser.  This is a great way to help raise money for Hyannis West while also advertising local businesses.  If you have an item to donate, please contact Bridget Meredith at meredith_bridget@mybps.us.

    • Did you know that if your child is absent from school more than 10% of the days they are enrolled, then they are considered chronically absent?  For example, we have been in school for approximately 60 days.  If your child has been absent 6 times already, then they are chronically absent.  We are required to report our absences to the Department of Education regardless of whether they are excused or unexcused.  We appreciate our families for making every effort to have their child attend school unless they are sick.

    • For the next couple of weeks, we are going to work on the Star Expectation of respecting each other’s personal space.  The kids are so excited to not have to be 6ft apart, post-Covid, but they are still building the social skills related to personal space.  Scroll down to see if your child was a Star Student for the week of November 14th.

    • Members of the Wampanoag Tribe will be at Hyannis West on Friday, December 9th to engage our students in the Wampanoag culture through dance.  Please ask your child about it on Friday.

    • The next PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) meeting is January 5th at 6:00 pm via Zoom.  Meetings are the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm. During meetings we will discuss fundraising efforts and schoolwide events.  We’d love to see you! https://mybps-us.zoom.us/j/89929603388?pwd=cTk1dVNKcmNLcGhVa0VJWlJqYk5hdz09   Meeting ID: 899 2960 3388    Passcode: 999429

    • If your child is too sick to attend school, please report their absence to Nurse Ricki at (508) 790-6480 ext. 1532 or via email at balestri_ricki@mybps.us.  Below are this year’s COVID protocols:

    • For student safety, it’s extremely important to update your child’s contact information each year. To update your child’s information, click https://www.barnstable.k12.ma.us/update_portal.  The username is your child’s 6 digit ID (“lunch number”) which the classroom teacher can provide for you. The password is your child’s birthdate _ _/_ _/_ _ _ _.

Please check your child’s backpack nightly and check your email frequently as this will by the school’s primary method of communication with our families.  If you ever have any questions, concerns or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, Mr. Currey or me.

    Respectfully,
    Kathi Amato
