• Standards for Mathematical Practice

     

    The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education.
     

     

    Make sense of problems and persevere solving them.

    Does my problem make sense?

    Does my solution make sense?

    What plan will I use to solve the problem?

    Is there another way to solve the problem?

     

    Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

    How can I show the problem using:

     Numbers, words, pictures, symbols, objects, grids and tables?

     

    Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

    Can I explain how I solved the problem?

     Can I tell someone why the strategy I used works?

     Can I talk with a partner and communicate how I feel they solved the problem?

     

    Model with mathematics.

    Can I find ways to use what I am learning in everyday life

    Can I use drawings and diagrams to solve problems?

     

    Use appropriate tools strategically.

     Do I use math tools correctly? (number grids, ruler, charts)

    Can I choose tools that will help me solve the problem?

     Can I use tools to check my answer?

     

    Attend to precision.

    Can I communicate to others what I am thinking?

    Am I accurate when I count, measure, calculate, solve problems?

     

    Look for and make use of structure

    Can I find patterns in numbers and objects?

    Can I extend the patterns?

     Can I use patterns to help solve problems?

     

    Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

    Can I recognize rules to use for solving problems?
    Do I reflect on how I am solving the problem before during and after?
