    When people think of the Fall, they associate it with apple picking, fall foliage, and shorter days.  When school districts think of the Fall, we associate it with the release of MCAS results, and this Fall is no different.  In mid-October, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released the results of the Spring 2017 MCAS, referred to as the next-generation MCAS.

    You might be wondering, what is the next-generation MCAS?  And why did we move away from the legacy MCAS?  In answer to the first, the next-generation MCAS is an updated version of the nearly 20-year old MCAS assessment.  Barnstable’s students in grades 3 – 8 were administered the next-generation MCAS this past Spring, while our grade 10 students were assessed using the legacy MCAS.  The next-generation MCAS assesses students on their ability to apply their knowledge and make connections between reading and writing.  It is an assessment that, by 2019, will be administered to all of our grade 3 – 8 students as an online assessment.  As to the second question of why did we move away from the legacy MCAS for our grades 3 – 8 students, the next-generation MCAS is ‘designed to have coherent, consistent high standards from one grade to the next’.  The next generation MCAS is designed to identify where students are academically and make midcourse adjustments to get them back on track.

    The next-generation MCAS also brings with it a change to the scoring categories.  The legacy MCAS test identified the four performance levels as Advanced, Proficient, Needs Improvement, and Warning/Failing based on scaled scores ranging from 200 – 280.  The next-generation MCAS designates the four scoring categories as Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations, and Not Meeting Expectations with scaled scores ranging from 440 – 560.  These new categories emphasize readiness for higher-level work at the next grade level. The Meeting Expectations standard gives a clear indication of students’ readiness for the grade level they are moving into which over the course of a their schooling experience, translates into college and career readiness.

    Parents and guardians should expect to receive their child’s score report at the end of October/early November.  The reports will provide you with overall results, content area information, as well as reporting categories and item level information.  The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has put together a variety of resources to assist parents with the navigation of the MCAS reports.  The resources can be found at http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/parents/.

    In the coming days and weeks, school and district leaders will be working with their staff to dig deep into the MCAS results which will help us to assess our curriculum, fine tune our instructional practices, and make sure we are providing our students with the learning they need.
