You and a friend will explore the five sections of the series
of investigation. By doing research using the Internet and library books
you will learn more about this wonderful creature, that long ago walked
on land. You will learn much of the habitat of the humpback, the evolution
from a land animal, and to its journey to near extinction. |
Investigation 1: Research the whale from long ago. Make a list of ways the whale has changed. |
Investigation 2: Are whales fish? Check out this site and then print out and complete a Venn diagram to show what you have learned. |
Investigation 3: Were you surprised that there were two types of whales; toothed and baleen? Both types have many things in common, but they are unique as well. Learn about each group and then write a short paragraph describing the ways they are alike and the ways they are different. You may want to create a Venn diagram as a graphic organizer for this .

Toothed
Investigation 4: The whale watch you will be going on will travel out into the Atlantic off the coast of Cape Cod. This area is home in the spring and fall to the humpback whale, a migratory animal that travels thousands of miles each year.
Investigation 5: Today the whale is a protected animal, but long ago the whale was a valuable source of oil, food, and other by products. At one time New Bedford was one of the richest cities in the world, it was considered the capital of the whaling industry. View these sites and then make a semantic map of reasons why the whale was so hunted.
