Introduction

Ahoy there! We've learned a lot about mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles, but not about the other vertebrate. Do you know the one I'm talking about? Fish! Here on Cape Cod we have fish all over the place. They're in ponds, lakes, rivers and of course, the ocean. We're going to learn about fish together. We'll use the computers with a buddy and search around for great pictures and facts about our finned friends. Happy fishing!

The Quest

Do you know everything about the fish who live near Cape Cod? Do you know about other fish that don't live near the Cape?  This Quest will help you learn about some different types of fish and their characteristics.

The Process and Resources

In this WebQuest you will be working with another student. You will each search a website to find a picture and a few facts about your fish. You get to pick the fish you want to research, but you and your buddy must agree.

No two groups can research the same fish. We are going to make a class book in Hyperstudio and we want to learn about as many fish as we can.

Phase 1 - Background: Something for Everyone

Let's take a look at these sites and find out a little about fish. You and your buddy can check these sites out together also.
  • Fish Printouts - A whole school of fish pictures and facts.
  • Yahooligans! -  Several links to fish pictures and information.
  • How Fish Swim - Let's learn how fish swim
  • Phase 2 - Looking Deeper from Different Perspectives

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. Decide who is the Captain and who is the First Mate. You both have an important job, but you need to share the work.

    2. The Captain needs to check his/her site for any pictures or information about his/her fish.

*Show the teacher what you found so we can copy it for the book.

    3. The First Mate needs to check his/her site for any pictures or information about his/her fish.

*Show the teacher what you found so we can copy it for the book.

    4. The teacher will save your work because you're going to use it later.

    5. Go into Hyperstudio and create the page about your fish. You need to work with your buddy. If you need to use two
pages it's O.K., just ask for help.

    6. Raise your hand! The teacher needs to check your work and make sure it's saved. We don't want your hard work to
         be lost at sea.

    Captain

Captain, you have control of the ship (The Mouse). You need to go to these sites and search for pictures of your fish. Raise your hand when you find something so we can help you save it.

    First Mate

First Mate, now you have control of the ship (The Mouse). You need to go to this site and search for information about your fish. Raise your hand when you find something so we can help you save it.

Phase 3 - Debating, Discussing, and Reaching Consensus

How many fish did we learn about? Are they all from Cape Cod? Are some fresh water fish and some salt water fish? Let's talk about what we found out.

Phase 4 - Real World Feedback

You and your partner have found out some great information about fish. Let's get off the Internet and into Hyperstudio. it's time to add your information to the class book about fish.

    Conclusion

You have all learned about a different Fish. Together, we made a beautiful book about many types of fish. Now, for years to come, others can sit at the computer and read our wonderful book of... Fish: The Other Vertebrate.
