Process
Welcome
to the Teacher's Process Page
of the Dewey Decimal WebQuest!
This
WebQuest is multidisciplinary. It will introduce the students to the
Dewey Decimal System, which in itself is a valuable tool, and it will
also demonstrate the value of the World Wide Web as a research tool.
The lesson is organized into two parts. Adventure One is an introduction
to the WebQuest activity and the Dewey Decimal System. The students
jump right in and begin to get information about fiction and nonfiction
books. Aventure Two continues the learning process by going through
the Dewey Decimal Call numbers. All through the WebQuest, the students
are reminded of their plight -- being locked in the library.
In different
settings, this activity must be approached differently. In the single
computer classroom, this may be an ongoing multi-session project. It
can be introduced to the entire class. Each student can be given the
worksheet and told to work on the WebQuest as part of their Activity
Center time. In a lab environment, where each student has his or her
own computer, the WebQuest should take two sessions. The first session
would be for an introduction to WebQuests, if this is the students'
first experience with WebQuests, and an introduction or discussion of
the Dewey Decimal System, again depending upon the students' knowledge
of the subject.
The Dewey Decimal
WebQuest will work well as either an individual activity or as a cooperative
learning activity. As a cooperative activity, the students can each
have their own worksheet, working somewhat independently, and then
compare answers, working out any differences they may have come up
with. The students can also work together gathering the answers to
the questions and filling out one worksheet. The cooperative approach
would be very similiar in both the single computer classroom and the
computer lab.
For the students
who can take this WebQuest further, an additional activity could be
giving them access to the local library's online search page and have
them get the call numbers for books on subjects they are studying.
The books could later be picked up at the library. Another activity
would be in Adventure 2, instead of just listing the book and web
site links on their worksheet, the student could click on one of these
links and acquire additional information on the subject.
This
WebQuest requires the teacher to have some knowledge of the browser
available though his or her school's network. The WebQuest itself has
a lot of information about the Dewey Decimal System, so all the teacher
would need to do is to work through this WebQuest prior to the introduction
of the lesson. This is probably a good idea if for no other reason than
to check and make sure that all the links are active.
Please
be aware that some of the links in Adventure 2 are external sites and
their current availability are beyond the control of the WebQuest developers.
This would be an excellent opportunity to introduce the children to
what to do when they find a "dead" link.
Here
is the Dewey Decimal WebQuest as your students will see it. It is our
hope that you and your students enjoy and learn from it in its use as
we have in its development.
