What is a

CALL NUMBER?

Each book in the library has its own unique identifier. This is called the Call Number. A Call Number is a group of numbers and/or letters that is found on the lower edge of the book's spine.

The Call Number is like an address for the book. It tells you where the book is located in the library.

Books written about the same subject have call numbers that are similar. You will find these books grouped together on the shelf.

Mr. Dewey created a system of classifying books in the library. He put certain subjects under certain numbers so that all nonfiction books with the same subject would be together on the shelf. Dewey divided the nonfiction books into 10 main classes.
