PRACTICE FOR THE PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE
Dear Parents:
At this time every year our first through fourth graders participate in the President’s Physical Fitness Challenge. We will practice for a couple of weeks and then we will test the students in five events. This program helps us to assess, motive, and improve the current fitness level of our students ages 6-11.
Since we offer gym once a week, we would ask that you work as a family to help us increase the awareness of physical activity. We believe that this opportunity fits nicely into our School Wellness Portion of our Accountability Plan. The early lessons of balancing an active physical routine with good nutrition provide everyone with a healthier lifestyle.
During our practice segment, I will review the proper techniques for each event. This will include proper pacing in the long distance run. Below is a list of events and what skills are being assessed. In addition, we have attached the qualifying standards for the Presidential's Presidential and National Awards.
Curl Ups: Tests abdominal strength/endurance in one (1) minute
Shuttle Run: Tests agility and speed
Endurance Run/Walk Tests heart/lung endurance. This test records the fastest times for ¼, 1/2, or
1 mile run (age determines the running distance).
Right Angle Push Ups Tests upper body strength/endurance.
Sit and Reach Tests flexibility of lower back and hamstrings.
We hope that you will assist your child(ren) to make this small change towards a more active lifestyle.
Sincerely,
Sandy Fruean
