Miss Powers' First Grade students in Room 6 are
the proud caretakers of four baby Diamondback Terrapins for this
school year. The class is "headstarting" (captive rearing)
them so that when they are released this Spring, their body size
will be comparable to a three or four year old terrapin in the
wild and have a better survival rate. Right now their shells are
about the size of a half-dollar.
We are collecting data on their feeding habits,
size of their shell, weight, and behavior. We will be conducting
other experiments in the future.
We will keep you posted through the year!
