New Spring Sport Policy - BHS athletics will be shut down for April School Vacation.
There will be no scheduled games or practices for the week*.
This new policy is in effect for the following reasons:
1. Philosophy of Family First. In the past, many families were not able to take vacation breaks, expecially if their son or daughter was a multi sport athlete.
2. This will afford juniors and seniors additional college visit opportunities.
3. Custodial and Maintenence savings.
4. Inequity in past practices - some teams practiced, some did not. Only 2 teams had a game last year.
5. Increasing demands on families and student athletes with little opportunity for family time.
6. Increased parent complaints over this issue.
7. On balance, little if anything is gained competitively from a few practices/games days of vacation.
*Sailing, due to its mixture of private & public schools, is the exception. The competitions scheduled are unavoidable, and will take place. Participation in these contests is optional.

Common parent question:
Can a student compete in an outside sport activity in the same season as an inter-scholastic sport? The answer is yes, it is permitted. However, be aware of the MIAA State Association 'Loyalty to the Team' rule which says you may not miss any high school practice or game to do another outside sport.
This includes all rescheduled practices, games and post season competitions. |
