Keeping the public informed of excellence at Barnstable High School.

| Hyannis, February 7, 2012: |
- We are very excited to announce that Barnstable High School has been awarded a “Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative Grant.” Through this grant, B.H.S. will be able to grow and expand our Advanced Placement Programs for the next three years. This grant will directly support our school improvement goal (number 3) which is to increase the number of low-income and minority students in the Advance Placement Program. Students will shift from wondering if they should take an A.P. class to choosing the best A.P. class for them.
- Barnstable High School currently has one of the most comprehensive Advanced Placement Programs in Eastern Massachusetts. With the support of the MMSI grant, we will become the A.P. showcase for the Commonwealth. Currently, Barnstable High School supports the Advance Placement International Diploma – a College Board recognition of our nation’s students who complete the most rigorous course of study, along with their international inquiry project.
- To support the projected growth of the B.H.S. Advance Placement Program, teachers in grades 6 -8 will receive specialized “Pre-Advance Placement Training” to establish both rigorous academic standards and executive functioning skills at the Intermediate Level. We fully embrace our new relationship with the a Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative; the expanded A.P. course offering will certainly position B.H.S. as one of the premier, comprehensive public high schools in Massachusetts, providing academic rigor and challenges for all.
- The Advanced Placement Fair will be held in the Main cafeteria on Friday, February 17th from 10:00 AM until 12 noon. Underclassmen will review A.P. curriculum and hear testimony from A.P. teachers and students. The Advanced Placement Fair coincides with the beginning of the course selection process for the 2012-2013 school year.
- Barnstable High School will hold its “Community Open House and Program of Studies Day” on Saturday, March 3rd from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. The community is cordially invited to tour the facilities, examine academic programs, and meet our faculty and students. We invite all school choice families who are looking for an excellent high school experience for their students to attend this Open House. Once you experience all that B.H.S. has to offer, you and your student will come to understand that “You Belong in Barnstable!”
- Any student who would like to spend a day at Barnstable High School – paired with another B.H.S. student – should contact Leslie McDonald in the School Counseling Office at 508-790-9866. Follow-up appointments with Principal Patrick Clark are available for any student looking to attend Barnstable High School.
- Yo-Yo Ma, the world’s most recognized classical musician, was at Barnstable High School on Wednesday, February 1st in preparation of his concert with the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra that evening. Our Barnstable High School music students and staff were so excited to get a sneak peek at Yo-Yo Ma.
- The Barnstable High School Art Department “Memory Project” will be on display at the new Barnstable Municipal Airport Terminal later this month. The “Memory Project” is an artistic partnership with an impoverished Peruvian village. Through this project, B.H.S students complete portraits of the village’s children. The exhibit will move to the Barnstable School Administration Building later in the spring.
- How do you get to Symphony Hall? Practice, Practice, Practice! Congratulations to Richard Egan who will represent Barnstable as a member of the “All-Massachusetts Band” after being selected for this honor by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association.
- Recently, wrestler, Will Henson, won the South Sectional Division 1 Championship. Congratulations, Will, for becoming one of the best wrestlers in the state!

- There were two Winter Track Individual champions this year: Amanda Henson won the 50 meter in 7.4 seconds and Molly McDonald won the 55 meter hurdles in 9.5 seconds.
- Barnstable Athletic Programs are currently positioning themselves for league championships and/or post-season play. The following programs have qualified for continued play: Boys and Girls Hockey, Boys and Girls Basketball, Gymnastics, Swimming and individual winter Track Athletes. Obviously, it has been and exceptional winter sports season at B.H.S. Congratulation to all the student athletes and their coaches!
- In collaboration with Barnstable High School, the Hyannis Youth and Community Center and the Barnstable Libraries, Gosnold Treatment Center presents motivational speaker and former Boston Celtic, Chris Herron on Thursday, January 12th at 6:30 PM. There is no charge for this presentation; all are welcome and encouraged to attend! Fall River native and former Boston Celtic, Christopher Herren, will share the story of his spiral into drug and alcohol abuse and his eventual recovery and rehabilitation at the Miller House, a Gosnold recovery program in Woods Hole. Herren was recently the subject of a compelling ESPN documentary entitled “Unguarded.” The ESPN documentary, “Unguarded,” was named the 2011 Sports Documentary of the Year! Barnstable High School is very excited to host this presentation and hope all will join us next Thursday, January 12th at 6:30 PM.
- On December 13, 2011, Governor Deval Patrick awarded Barnstable High School a citation in recognition of the creation, development, and implementation of the high school’s anti-bullying program. This citation is in response to the numerous innovative anti-bullying strategies that have been implemented by Barnstable High School. Only thirty schools in the commonwealth were awarded this citation. Congratulations to the leadership and staff for this well-deserved recognition!
- The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is sponsoring the art show "Wild Things" at the Cotuit Center of the Arts. This is a major exhibition of established and emerging Cape Cod artists. Our own art teachers Mrs. Weill, Mr. Sullivan, and Mr. Lopes will join 54 other artists for this visual safari of the imagination. Faculty, students and friends are invited to the Opening Reception on Saturday, January 7th at 7 pm, which will include a performance by the Cape Cod African Dance and Drum.
- Also, over a dozen Barnstable High School students are represented at the Cape-wide student art exhibition titled “Through Young Eyes” at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. The exhibition, which runs through January 15th 2012, represents a large-scale collaboration between the museum and schools Cape-wide.
