MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Barnstable Community Horace Mann Charter Public School (BCHMCPS) is to be a whole school community that provides a challenging and enriching environment for all children Kindergarten through grade 3; and where all children achieve high academic standards and develop character. We support the whole child and continuous improvement in the teaching process, and consider a whole school community as integral to success.

From Mrs. Cantelmo, School Leader/Principal:
We are enjoying the beginning of spring and looking forward to the classroom and school activities that celebrate our students’ work at Barnstable Community Horace Mann Charter Public School (BCHMCPS) this year.

We had a busy week at BCHMCPS this week!  On April 9th & 10th the 3rd grade classes of Mrs. Thonus & Mrs. Tabor demonstrated their knowledge of the Solar System with two plays each day.  Many parents and grandparents attended and enjoyed this student performance.  What a great example of “Powerful Learning” which is part of our BCHMCPS Accelerated School Plus (ASP) philosophy!

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) visits schools annually to conduct Coordinated Program Reviews (CPR) which are a review of all of our programs (Special Education, Title 1, English Language Learners, etc.).  DESE visited our school on Wednesday, April 11. They toured our building, interviewed administration and staff members.  After the visit, DESE prepares a report highlighting strengths and areas we need to improve.

The Friends of BCHMCPS will be holding an Auction at the Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville on May 18th beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The Friends Foundation of BCHMCPS is a 501(c) (3) group established to help support the school through financial and volunteer support.  Friends Mission is to provide discretionary financial support for the school, solicit support from the community at large, and provide donations and scholarships for extra-curricular activities for families that have demonstrated need.  Tickets to the auction are $30 per person, which includes dinner. The event is open to the public.  There is still time to donate items for the Auction!

Have a fun, safe and restful vacation!  Thank you for your support.

PTO Notes:
Gymport Gymnastics has offered the PTO Sunday afternoon, May 6th to visit their new location in Hyannis.  The kids will have a couple of hours of fun for a little cost.  An All School Walk-a-thon will be held on May 11th and Fit Friday at the beginning of June.   The PTO Committee is still looking for parents to fill positions for next year.  If anyone is interested, please contact Annie Olsen or Dawna Baird.

Notes from the Nurse (Is It Cold or the Flu?):
Spring is upon us, but the weather can change overnight. Please dress your children appropriately for the weather. Closed toed shoes and sneakers are best for outside recess.  Just a reminder to third grade parents: State law requires that your child have a physical exam in the third grade. If you have a copy of his/her most recent physical, please drop it off at the health office. Ann Marie Melley RN, Contact.  Phone:  508-790-6495

Cold and flu season are still here so please take these measures:

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Cover your cough and sneezes
  • Get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids and eat healthy
  • If your child is sick with a fever, has a diagnosis of a contagious illness such as strep throat, conjunctivitis, scarlet fever or other infection please keep him/her home from school. If a child is treated with antibiotics, he/she must be on the medication for 24 hours prior to returning to school. Please report confirmed diagnosis of a communicable disease to the health office. Your child should also stay home if he/she has vomiting or diarrhea in the past 24 hours.

Notes from the School Store ( Apr. 27th, May 25th):

The school store will be open during lunch hours for our students on Friday,  Apr. 27th and May 25th!   There will be pencils, erasers, stickers, and many other fun items for sale. Prices will start at a dime and there will be many things to choose from!  Students in grades 1-3 are welcome to shop once they have finished their lunch.  This is a fun way for our children to finish their week of learning!  Cheryl Quast, Contact.

Notes from the Garden:
Thank you to all the parents that have volunteered to help with our Community Garden.  Five parents have volunteered to coordinate the garden:  Tara Bendenkop, Project Coordinator, Andrea Burnett, Diana Sherburne, Tammy Smith and Joanne Sheaffer-White.  The staff representatives are Amy Jones-Gr. K, Erin McGuinness-Gr. 1, Kristin Skaggs-Gr. 2 and Kim Ellenbolt-Gr. 3.  The Garden is a great enrichment project that supports our curriculum and children!!  The next meeting is Wed. May 2, at 4:00 p.m. in the Staff Room.  Email Contact:  thegardenatbchmcps@gmail.com
