District Announcements

Principal's Corner

Greetings Hyannis West Students and Families!
Kathi Amato
Welcome to a new school year! I am looking forward to seeing all of our returning students as well as meeting our incoming Kindergarteners and students who have recently moved to our district. We are in for a wonderful year! Here is some information for you to make the start of the school year a success!
Tuesday, September 2nd, is the first official day for students in grades 1-3. If any specific school supplies are needed, your child’s teacher will let you know before school begins. The school will be open from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 28th, if you would like to come by Hyannis West and walk your child to their new classroom. Keep in mind that their teacher might not be there, but seeing the classroom might help them feel more comfortable if it is their first time at Hyannis West. Also, during that time, we will have a free backpack give-away, sponsored by Citizen’s Bank and the Masonic Angels. All you have to do is bring your Hy West student by and they will receive a free backpack and some school supplies.
For our incoming Kindergarteners, Tuesday, September 2nd is an orientation day. All parents/guardians of incoming Kindergarten students will receive a separate letter to let you know if you should arrive with your child at 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. The orientation should take approximately one hour. Please note that if your child’s registration packet is incomplete, they will be unable to begin Kindergarten on September 3rd.
If your child is in grades 1- 3 and in June you completed and sent in the form to sign your child up for morning and/or afternoon daycare then the first day for daycare is the first day of school, 9/2. If your child is entering Kindergarten and you are interested in having them attend morning or afternoon daycare, the forms will be available at Orientation on September 2nd. Daycare for Kindergarten only will begin on Monday, September 8th.
I am happy to announce that we have a few new staff members that have joined the Hyannis West Family. They are:
Monique Cayer – 1st Grade Teacher
Anastaci Pacella – Art Teacher
Lynn Burrill – Music Teacher
The first week of school several notices will be sent home to be completed and returned: the Student Verification Form, the last page of the Student Handbook, the Acceptable Use Internet Policy, and the Free/Reduced Lunch Application. All forms should be returned to school in your child’s backpack.
A couple of changes will take place this year. One change is due to the high percentage of free/reduced lunch students that attend Hyannis West, we will now offer Universal free breakfast and free lunch for all! Also, there will be NO morning walk for students. All students will enter the building in the morning and go to breakfast or straight to class. This will set the tone for learning for the day!
Being in school every day, on time, is extremely important. Please make sure that if your child is riding the bus, he/she has a current bus pass that is attached to their backpack on the first day. If you have not requested or received a bus pass, please call the Transportation Office at (508) 790-6498 or visit the Barnstable Public Schools website.
If you drop-off and/or pick-up your child, our procedures have not changed. For everyone to be safe, please remain in your car, follow the car traffic around to the busport, and a staff member will meet you at your car. There is no parking allowed around the busport area. If you need to come inside for any reason, please park in the front of the school and enter through the front office.
I look forward to seeing you at our Hyannis West Open-house on Wednesday, September 17th, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Please visit our website, often for classroom and school news and important, upcoming events. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call the front office at (508) 790-6480.
